Creating a Learning Culture - Part 3

Over the past two weeks we've focused on the importance of creating an organizational learning culture. This post will wrap up our thoughts on creating a learning culture and our series on the ways in which L&D can help organizations grow. Let's learn more about some of the benefits of a learning culture.

Learning to work together in a learning culture provides the opportunity for real growth, unleashing innovation, and ultimately making a greater impact.

The Benefits of a Learning Culture

Establishing a learning culture can provide real benefits to any organization, especially as they seek to empower individuals and teams to achieve more together. Here are a few areas where a learning culture can generate big rewards:

  1. Collaboration - there's lots of talk about collaboration and how it can benefit individuals and teams, especially as they seek to grow. When done well, collaborating with others provides a greater sense of belonging and engagement, generates better and more connections between people and ideas, and motivates ongoing work together. How do we generate this type of collaboration? One solution is to center learning at the heart of the collaborative process. When each person is both a learner and a contributor, there is greater opportunity for connection and collaboration, and for team building rather than everything becoming centered around one person.

  2. Innovation - related to collaboration, when a culture of learning is embedded within an organization it provides greater opportunities for innovation. A learning culture emphasizes that learning is a process that takes time, leverages intentionality, and has moments of success and failure. When these aspects are openly communicated and celebrated, it helps individuals and teams to take risks, to speak up, to consider new ideas, and share knowledge more freely. All of this opens up avenues for greater creativity, learning, and discovering something new.

  3. Productivity - a culture of learning feeds into the overall mission and strategic priorities for an organization when done right. Teams and individual employees are supported in their learning and growth, collaboration and innovation can increase, and the overall result is greater effectiveness or productivity. Whether you are a business leader seeking to gain greater market share, or a non-profit leader seeking to make a bigger difference in your community, building a learning culture can help you grow and achieve more.
